Last Week In Sherwood Park:

  • Council has verbally supported the Strathcona Food Bank's (SFB) request for a letter of support to assist with two federal grant applications for its planned $5 million Nourish Centre. This new facility, set to be 30% larger than their current location, will include a commercial kitchen, community spaces, and a shop-the-shelves model for clients. While the food bank anticipates serving 27,000 visits and feeding around 6,000 people in 2024, a monetary commitment from Council is still pending. A funding request of $250,000 per year for three years will be considered during the 2026 Budget process, following a delay to establish a decision-making framework for such requests from non-profit organizations. The SFB aims to break ground on the Nourish Centre in the second quarter of 2025 and hopes to move in by the second quarter of 2026.

  • Festival Place celebrated its 30th anniversary, marking three decades as a cultural hub with a lively event featuring speeches, archival displays, and a performance by artist Chantal Kreviazuk. The facility has consistently hosted a diverse range of events, including concerts, comedy shows, and community programs, attracting over 300,000 visitors annually. Key speakers reflected on the evolution of Festival Place, emphasizing its role in fostering community and artistic expression. Looking ahead, Festival Place will offer a production of "Cinderella" during the holiday season.

  • Wes Hosford Elementary School celebrated the unveiling of its newly upgraded playground, designed to enhance accessibility for all students. This project, which took nearly a decade of planning, involved collaboration among Council, Elk Island Public Schools, parents, and local businesses. The new playground features an array of equipment, including a climbing structure, spinning devices, a swing set, and sensory pathways, doubling the number of play options available.
