Sherwood Park Minute: Impaired Driving, Campaign Announcement, and Fair Election Processes

Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

This Week In Sherwood Park:

  • There will be a Council Meeting on Tuesday at 9:00 am. The meeting begins with a closed session, wherein Council will discuss Extended Producer Responsibility Agreements and the Heartland Water Project Update. When the meeting opens up to the public, the agenda includes proposed road and park names within Ardrossan East Stage 11 and Hillshire East Stage 2. There will also be a Public Hearing to address several land use amendment proposals.

  • During their meeting, Council will consider an amendment to the Council Code of Conduct, to “support fair election processes for all candidates.” The proposed changes would allow current members of Council to access County facilities, equipment, and resources for their election campaigns, ensuring they are treated the same as other candidates. This adjustment changes a provision in the original bylaw, which prohibited elected officials from using these resources for campaign purposes. The amendment does not alter the requirement for municipal assets to be used only for official duties.

  • Several community groups will make requests to Council for funding. The Sherwood Park Kings Athletic Club is requesting $1,625 to support costs for the U18AA Female Hockey Provincial Championships. The Sherwood Park Music Festival Association is looking for $675 for its scholarship sponsorship program, and Connor Fixsen is asking for $667.80 to rent meeting space for community games nights under the Inclusive Connectivity initiative. All three funding proposals are recommended for approval by Administration.

Last Week In Sherwood Park:

  • Strathcona County has begun a year-long pilot project today, implementing Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) to combat impaired driving. Peace officers will now be able to conduct roadside breath tests on drivers suspected of alcohol impairment, a tool previously unavailable to them without RCMP support. The project aims to enhance road safety and reduce pressure on RCMP resources. MAS will be conducted during traffic stops for other violations, such as speeding, not as a standalone check. If drivers refuse a breath sample or exceed the legal alcohol limit, they could face fines, education programs, or a driver's license suspension.

  • Tracey Giroux launched her campaign for the Ward 2 Councillor seat. Giroux, a Sherwood Park resident for over 10 years and a community peace officer at the University of Alberta, has a platform that emphasizes affordability, community safety, and local development. She is advocating for targeted property tax relief, increased public safety measures, and expanded local services like transit and healthcare. Incumbent Dave Anderson will not seek re-election.

  • Strathcona County marked the 500-day countdown to the 2026 Alberta Summer Games with an event at Millennium Place. The Games, set for July 16th to 19th, 2026, will feature 13 sports across various local venues and neighbouring municipalities, attracting over 2,000 athletes and 5,000 attendees. The County expects significant economic benefits from the event, with over 1,000 volunteers needed to ensure its success. The official branding was revealed, showcasing a jewel-toned bison symbolizing the perseverance of athletes. In July 2023, Strathcona County Council approved the allocation of $1.9 million to support the bid, although this amount is anticipated to decrease based on sponsorships, grants, and fundraising efforts.
