On Tuesday, at 9:00 am, there will be a Council meeting. Council is being asked to approve the demolition and reclamation of the Ecole Campbelltown building, a 33,000-square-foot facility built in 1956. Administration’s assessment found that significant renovations would be required to make the space functional for modern uses, including reconfiguring interior walls, updating washrooms, and replacing aging HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems. Due to the age of the building and the high cost of retrofitting, retaining the school for continued use is not financially feasible. The site is currently designated as Municipal Reserve, meaning it can only be used for parks or recreation unless the designation is removed through public notification and a hearing. Administration recommends demolition so the land can be reclaimed for future park or recreational purposes, with the revised project budget included in the 2027-2030 Capital Plan for Council’s consideration.
-
Council is also being asked to approve the naming of two roads in Hearthstone Stage 4 as “Grassland Link” and “Meadowsweet Loop.” The proposed names align with the existing Hearthstone naming theme and comply with the County’s Municipal Naming Policy. The road naming has been reviewed through the interdepartmental circulation process, and no objections were received. Approval of these names will allow the developer to proceed with addressing and signage for the new roads.
-
Also on the Council agenda is a request to approve a letter of support for a Royal Canadian Air Force flyby during the Canada Day Festival on July 1st, 2026, at Broadmoor Lake Park. The letter, to be signed by the Mayor on behalf of Council, confirms the County’s support for aircraft flying as low as 500 feet for transit, practice, and the show. This approval will allow the RCAF to participate in the celebrations.

Councillor Glen Lawrence wrote an op-ed highlighting the need for reliable local funding to support community initiatives in Strathcona County. He pointed out that seniors’ programs, youth scholarships, and environmental projects often struggle without steady financial support, and community foundations can help fill that gap. Lawrence noted that while the County doesn’t run these foundations, an information session on March 23rd, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, at the Strathcona County Community Centre will explore potential partnerships with the Edmonton Community Foundation. He encouraged anyone involved with local groups or interested in long-term community investment to attend, ask questions, and help shape whether this model could strengthen programs across the County. A local or partnered foundation, he argued, could provide stability, bring partners together, and keep local dollars working for local needs for the long term.
- Strathcona County is highlighting the 2026 Industrial Heartland Career Forum this afternoon at the Dow Centennial Centre in Fort Saskatchewan, a free event aimed at residents seeking careers in the trades or industrial sectors. The forum offers educational sessions, hands-on exhibits, and direct connections with employers and training organizations across fields like energy, construction, industrial maintenance, and safety. Attendees can explore apprenticeships, upskilling opportunities, and secondary training to gain skills for high-demand industrial roles. The event also supports the region’s growing labor needs and helps build a skilled workforce essential to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Organized in partnership with Fort Saskatchewan, Sturgeon County, Lamont County, and the Industrial Heartland Association, it reflects a collaborative focus on workforce development. Residents interested in attending need to register and can do so on the Industrial Heartland website.
