Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • On Thursday, at 9:00 am, there will be a Council meeting. The entirety of the meeting will be held in closed session as Council undertakes a Facilitated Workshop on Capital Planning.

  • Construction is set to begin this spring on Strathcona County’s new multi-purpose fieldhouse at 240 Broadview Drive, between Bethel Transit Terminal and Millennium Place, with the existing Sally Stewart Dog Park temporarily relocated for the project. Mayor Rod Frank says the facility responds to community priorities and will serve residents of all ages and abilities, promoting active engagement. The fieldhouse will feature divisible turf for multiple simultaneous activities, lockers, team and officials’ rooms, a multipurpose meeting space, and a lobby, and will host sports including baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and rugby. The project’s cost is estimated at $65 million, funded through a $35-million 25-year loan and $30 million from municipal reserves, down from an original $90-million plan that included five full-sized basketball courts.

  • Strathcona County Enforcement Services has completed a year-long pilot project granting Community Peace Officers the authority to conduct Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) and issue Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS). Between March 2025, and March 2026, officers carried out 9,486 MAS checks - split nearly evenly between check stops and proactive traffic enforcement - and issued 89 roadside sanctions, averaging two impaired drivers per week. Director Tom Sutton said that the program reduced RCMP demands while demonstrating the professionalism of participating officers. Sergeant Evan Brown noted that impaired-driving collisions in the County dropped 11% in 2025 compared to 2024.

  • Holy Redeemer Catholic School will soon get a new playground thanks to a $125,000 Community Facility Enhancement Program grant from the Government of Alberta, supplemented by fundraising efforts from the school’s parent council. The project addresses the aging “yellow playground,” which Strathcona County determined had reached the end of its lifecycle. Over the years, the parent council raised funds through initiatives like hot lunches, plant sales, Purdy’s chocolate campaigns, and community events, while also carefully managing saved funds and pursuing larger grants. MLA Nate Glubish joined school leaders and parent council members for a ceremonial cheque presentation on February 27th. Students were surveyed to help guide the design of the new playground, ensuring it meets their needs. Principal Ed Kucy emphasized that the project reflects the school community’s dedication and will provide a safe, vibrant space for students to play and build friendships. Construction is expected to take place in summer 2026.

  • In Strathcona County, three local organizations - A Safe Place, Saffron Centre, and the Strathcona County RCMP’s domestic violence unit - are collaborating to support victims of domestic and intimate partner violence. Representatives from the agencies met at County Hall to discuss their services and how they are working together to make access easier. Saffron Centre offers online counselling, education, court support, and a supportive reporting protocol in partnership with the RCMP, allowing victims to make police reports in a safe, non-detachment space. The RCMP unit investigates intimate partner violence cases, updates victims, and tracks high-risk offenders, while also promoting tools like Claire’s Law for checking a partner’s domestic violence history. A Safe Place provides 35 beds, a 24-hour hotline, crisis intervention, child care, and ongoing psychological supports for women and children fleeing unsafe living situations. Together, these agencies aim to reduce barriers and provide comprehensive care and protection for those affected by violence in the community.
