The County says that spring melt brings a daily cycle of thawing and refreezing, which often leads to icy surfaces and temporary water pooling in streets, ditches, and neighbourhood low spots. These conditions are usually short-lived and resolve naturally, though rising water levels in ponds and occasional sulphur-like odours from disturbed organic material are also normal during this period. Residents are encouraged to prepare by clearing gutters, directing water away from foundations, and ensuring drainage systems like sump pumps are working properly. Keeping snow, ice, and debris away from storm drains and road gutters can also help prevent drainage issues. The County says it prioritizes response efforts based on risk, focusing first on threats to property and infrastructure. Residents should report serious flooding concerns immediately, while non-urgent drainage issues can be submitted through the County’s online system.

The County encourages participants to prepare in advance by setting up accounts and ensuring their information is up to date before registering.

The petition to recall MLA Nate Glubish has ended without reaching the required 15,770 signatures, with organizers collecting 1,326, or about 8% of the goal. Despite this, lead organizer Drake Worth said the campaign was a success in engaging the community and sparking discussion about local representation. The recall effort was driven by concerns that Glubish has focused more on ministerial duties, such as promoting AI data centres, than on constituency issues like local water access. Organizers emphasized that the campaign was not partisan but aimed at giving residents a democratic voice. Challenges included harsh winter weather, limited promotional resources, and restrictions on solicitation in public facilities. Worth highlighted the importance of transparency in implementing AI and maintaining accountability among elected officials. While the petition fell short, Worth said it reinforced the need for residents to expect active engagement and responsiveness from their MLA. He plans to continue efforts to hold local representatives accountable and encourage community involvement.
- Strathcona County RCMP are warning residents about a series of distraction thefts in Sherwood Park parking lots reported over the past month. In these incidents, suspects approach victims posing as stranded motorists or claiming personal hardships, sometimes offering fake jewellery or asking for money for gas, food, or airfare. Tactics include selling counterfeit items, convincing victims to withdraw cash or buy gift cards, and using distraction techniques to swap valuables with fakes. Many suspects have been seen driving rental vehicles with out-of-province plates from Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. Police urge residents to stay vigilant, secure valuables, trust their instincts, and walk away from suspicious encounters. Anyone targeted or affected is encouraged to contact the RCMP or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
