Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • The Priorities Committee will meet on Tuesday at 8:00 am. The entirety of the meeting will be held in-camera, behind closed doors, discussing the 2026 Awards of Excellence Awards Selection.

  • On Tuesday, at 9:00 am, there will be a Council meeting. The meeting will begin in a closed session, and away from public view, Council will discuss items entitled: Property Tax Relief Request Process Review, Clarification on the Expression of Interest Process Campbelltown School Building and Property, and Commercial Waste Diversion Strategy Update.

  • When the meeting opens up to the public, Council will be asked to approve letters of support for the Heartland Housing Foundation’s funding applications to federal agencies, including the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Build Canada Homes. The request relates to the proposed redevelopment of the former Clover Bar Lodge site, known as the Fir Street Development, which aims to expand affordable housing options in the community. The project has already secured about 30% of its funding through a provincial program and is now seeking additional federal grants and financing to move forward. If funding is approved, the project is considered shovel-ready and could proceed to demolition and construction phases.

  • Council will also review the 2025 Annual Management Report. The report provides an overview of financial and operational performance, showing an overall consolidated surplus of $4.9 million for the year. Municipal operations generated higher-than-expected revenues, particularly from service fees, permits, and investment income, while expenses came in below budget due to delays in projects and operational efficiencies. Utility operations also performed strongly, producing a $3.6-million surplus driven by higher usage rates and lower-than-expected costs. The County continues to manage a large capital program, with over $636 million in approved projects and more than 100 projects completed or nearing completion. Key financial indicators remain stable, including $391.7 million in investments, $173.2 million in long-term debt, and $2.3 billion in tangible capital assets. While overall financial health is strong, the report notes ongoing pressure on infrastructure funding and emphasizes the need for continued careful financial management to ensure long-term sustainability.

  • Three motions will be debated by Council. The first, brought forward by Councillor Derbyshire, proposes endorsing Councillor Parks to run for a position on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Board of Directors for the 2026-2028 term, with municipal funding covering travel and up to $1,000 in campaign costs. The second motion, from Councillor Harvey, directs Administration to report back by the end of July 2026 on requiring hookah-serving establishments to display visible health advisory signage. The third motion, introduced by Councillor Parks, seeks Council’s support for a resolution from the Town of Penhold to increase the voting threshold at Alberta Municipalities (ABMunis), aimed at strengthening municipalities’ collective voice to the province.

🚨 This Week’s Action Item: 🚨

There is still time to fill out the Strathcona County annual budget survey!

The survey seeks to gather input from residents and businesses as it plans the 2027-2030 budget cycle, seeking feedback on taxes, service levels, and long-term priorities.

The survey takes about five minutes and remains open until April 18th, 2026, with results informing council discussions and public hearings later this year.
