• Strathcona County offices and several public facilities will be closed today for Heritage Day. Transit will operate on its Saturday schedule, with on-demand local service, hourly Route 411 trips to Edmonton, and Heritage Festival shuttle service running to Hawrelak Park. The library, Community Centre and County Hall offices, Strathcona Public Services Yard, and RCMP front counter services will all be closed for the day, while emergency services and the RCMP complaint line will continue operating as usual. Broadview Recycling Station and Clover Crossing Yard Services will remain open on their regular schedules. Regular County business hours will resume on Tuesday, August 4th.
  
  
• Strathcona County Council and its committees are not meeting this week. The County's meeting calendar shows no meetings scheduled for the entire month of August. Council's next scheduled meeting is on Tuesday, September 15th at 9:00 am, followed by a Priorities Committee meeting on September 22nd and a public hearing on September 29th.
  
  
• Meanwhile, Strathcona County officials met with Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams on July 24th to discuss the County's key priorities, including infrastructure maintenance, municipal codes of conduct, and ongoing health service challenges. Mayor Rod Frank said the meeting was an opportunity to highlight the issues and opportunities facing the County while reinforcing its willingness to work with the provincial government. A major focus was finding sustainable ways to manage existing assets, with Frank saying the County is interested in the work of the Minister's Council on Infrastructure Funding as it looks for long-term approaches to maintaining roads, facilities, and other municipal infrastructure. Other topics, including Bill 28, public libraries, and municipal autonomy, were discussed at a general level. Frank said the County continues to provide feedback on broader municipal issues through organizations including Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Mid-Sized Cities Mayors Caucus. He described the meeting as open and productive, adding that the Minister showed interest in learning more about Strathcona County and its priorities.
  
  
• Ward 1 Councillor Robert Parks is weighing in on the aftermath of the flooding that hit Strathcona County, saying the municipality will eventually face a choice between replacing damaged infrastructure and building it back stronger. In a column in the Sherwood Park News, Parks writes that stormwater ponds overflowed, pipes failed, roads washed out, and culverts were overwhelmed during the storms, and that the immediate response is now giving way to repairs and the work of determining exactly what was damaged. He says it is too early to know the final cost, with some repairs potentially involving rebuilding roads, replacing culverts, or repairing drainage and underground infrastructure. The County will also look for financial support from the province's disaster-related fund, which Parks says may ensure taxpayers are not left carrying the entire cost of an extraordinary storm. Parks argues the infrastructure that struggled was built to the standards and weather expectations of its time, and that smart investments now could prevent a much larger repair bill later. He cautions that a community cannot be designed to withstand every storm without ballooning costs, but says infrastructure should be built back stronger where practical and affordable.
  
  
• Strathcona County residents will have a chance to meet first responders and explore emergency vehicles at a free public showcase on Friday. The Strathcona County RCMP, in partnership with Strathcona County Enforcement Services, Strathcona County Emergency Services, and local public safety agencies, will host the Emergency Services and Public Safety Showcase from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Salisbury Composite High School parking lot in Sherwood Park. The family-friendly event will feature interactive displays, information booths, emergency response vehicles, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Participating organizations include the Alberta RCMP Recruiting Unit, Alberta Sheriffs, Edmonton Regional Search and Rescue, Utility Safety Partners, MADD Edmonton and Area Chapter, CN Police, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Police. The recruiting unit will also provide information about careers in policing and the RCMP recruitment process. Admission is free, though organizers say vehicle access to the parking lot will be limited during the event, with additional parking available nearby.
