• Ward 2 Councillor Mike Derbyshire is warning residents that a difficult budget season lies ahead. In a Sherwood Park News column, Derbyshire wrote that Council will return in September for a months-long budget conversation centred on a single question: where is the money going. He pointed to recent County survey results showing residents want to keep more dollars in their pockets while also maintaining service levels and long-term financial sustainability. Derbyshire noted that growth is not the only pressure on the budget, citing an estimated $1.83 billion in County assets coming due for renewal over the next five years. He argued that delaying investment in roads, facilities and equipment only makes it more expensive, and said the coming budget will force honest trade-offs between affordability and reliable services.
  
  
• Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams is defending proposed provincial regulations for public libraries after residents in Sherwood Park raised concerns about the legislation. The rules would require any material the Province considers pornographic to be placed behind the counter rather than removed from the library, and would require patrons aged 15 and under to get parental approval for independent borrowing. Williams said he expects few books would meet the definition and called the measure a proportionate response, adding that parents could authorize access for their children at any age. He made the comments while wrapping up his second summer tour of Alberta municipalities, which he said helped him better understand the challenges facing communities like Strathcona County.
  
  
• Strathcona County is rolling out new measures this fall to reduce garter snake deaths along a rural stretch of Range Road 210, where more than 1,000 snakes were reported killed by vehicles between 2023 and 2025. The County plans to install fencing that will funnel snakes toward culverts so they can reach their winter dens without crossing the road, and will lower the speed limit at one intersection near a known den. Officials have already tried seasonal electronic message boards and social media campaigns, and say snake deaths have fallen, though it is unclear whether that reflects more cautious drivers or a declining snake population. Permanent warning signs were installed earlier but were stolen three times, and the County decided not to replace them due to budget constraints. The work is being done with the Friends of Cooking Lake-Blackfoot, Elk Island National Park and the Beaver Hills Biosphere.
  
  
• Strathcona County, energy company Keyera and the non-profit Project Forest will break ground on Tuesday on the Keyera Legacy Forest, a 95-acre planting in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. Funded by Keyera, the project will add 40,140 native trees and shrubs to land that did not regrow after the 2009 wildfire, with the County using a conservation easement to protect the site permanently. Project Forest, which says it has planted more than a million trees with partners across the province, is carrying out the work. The County announced the partnership earlier this year, and a public groundbreaking celebration is set for 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the forest site.
  
  
• A Sherwood Park school-supply drive is marking its third year and its biggest haul yet. Give4Grades, run by a local tutoring company, collected 58 backpacks and more than 10,500 school supplies this year, up from about 1,200 last year and roughly 400 in its first year. Founders Lara and Greg Courtepatte started the drive in 2020 to help families who may struggle to afford classroom supplies, and 20 volunteers gathered on July 30th to sort this year's donations. The supplies are distributed to families through the Bissell Centre. Founder Lara Courtepatte said the program is meant to fill a gap where schools lack the capacity or funding to provide materials themselves.
