Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • Strathcona County's Priorities Committee will meet tomorrow at 9:00 am. One of the items on the agenda is a plan by Administration to stop routine snow clearing on approximately 20 kilometers of side yard sidewalks throughout Sherwood Park, beginning with the 2026-27 winter season. The change would affect sidewalks next to approximately 350 homes, and responsibility for them would pass to the adjacent property owners, who must clear sidewalks within 48 hours of a snowfall under the Community Standards Bylaw. The County would keep clearing sidewalks behind homes where owners have no direct access, park frontages, and walkways connecting parks, open spaces, and public amenities. Administration argues that the legacy practice created inconsistent service levels, with some side yard sidewalks cleared by the County while similar sidewalks next door were left to homeowners. Affected property owners are to be mailed an information package starting in mid-October, and the County plans to issue reminders this winter before regular bylaw enforcement begins.

  • The Priorities Committee agenda includes the first phase of Administration's response to Council's call for a Lean review of the Family and Community Services department. In December 2025, Council directed Administration to review the department's processes using internal resources to identify opportunities for efficiency and improvement. The first phase is an environmental scan of 10 comparator municipalities, which Administration says found the department has a comparable mandate and service structure to other communities. Final reporting and recommendations are not expected until early 2027, with an update on Lean evaluations of key department projects to be shared during budget discussions in the meantime. The department has a 2026 budget of $12.2 million, or 2.9% of the municipal budget, funded 70% by the County, 29% by provincial grants, and 1% by user fees. Administration reports that counselling sessions rose 35% and Family Resource Network program attendance rose 31% from 2024 to 2025, while provincial funding has remained relatively stagnant.

  • Administration will introduce the Priorities Committee to a plan to replace more than a dozen older statutory plans in Sherwood Park with two new area concept plans. The Northeast Sherwood Park plan would cover the area south of Highway 16, west of Highway 21, north of Baseline Road, and east of Sherwood Drive, including neighbourhoods such as Summerwood, Clarkdale Meadows, and Lakeland Ridge. The Southeast Sherwood Park plan would cover the area south of Baseline Road, west of Highway 21, north of Wye Road, and east of the Glen Allen, Brentwood, and Maplewood neighbourhoods, along with the Hillshire area south of Wye Road, replacing plans such as those for Nottingham, Heritage Hills, and Foxboro. Administration says most of the existing plans were adopted years ago for areas that are now largely built out, and that multiple amendments have made some of them less clear. It claims that significant changes to existing policy are not anticipated, and the work is being done in-house with no budget allotment required. An information campaign is planned for spring 2027, with final drafts going to a public hearing and a Council decision in fall 2027.

  • Strathcona County Enforcement Services led a joint commercial vehicle inspection operation from September 23rd to September 25th that completed 192 inspections and placed 77 commercial vehicles out of service. The County's Enforcement Services Manager said 40% of the vehicles failed inspection, almost 20% needed attention, and 40% passed. The inspectors, who complete annual training to keep their certification, check vehicles and drivers for a range of requirements, including lighting, hours of service, trip inspections, and valid commercial driver's licences. Common problems included cargo securement, defective brakes, and other brake system violations. Operators whose vehicles fail must make the necessary repairs and pay any outstanding fines, which start at $324 for a minor infraction, and inspectors can seize a vehicle they deem unsafe for travel.

  • Strathcona County is expanding the list of items residents can put out for recycling collection. Paper coffee cups with the lids removed, Styrofoam packaging such as takeout containers and electronics packaging, and plastic tubs and containers are among the major additions. Some aerosol containers will also be accepted, though the County is asking residents to recycle only aerosols holding products that go "on or in your body", such as food sprays, shaving cream, and hairspray. The changes are part of the provincial Extended Producer Responsibility program, which is intended to standardize recycling across the province and raise recovery rates.
