Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • On Tuesday, at 9:00 am, there will be a City Council meeting beginning with a closed session. Away from public view, Council will discuss a Governance Review of the Chief Commissioner Bylaw, the Land and Property Rights Tribunal’s Property Assessment Update 2025, three separate Proposed Additions of Commemorative Names to the Names Reserve List, and the Community Capital Funding Request Framework.

  • When the meeting opens up to the public, Council will discuss a proposal to replace the existing Chief Commissioner Bylaw with a new bylaw establishing the position of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).  The bylaw clearly defines the CAO’s authority to manage County employees, negotiate collective agreements, oversee financial and legal matters, approve land transactions, and handle licenses and permits. It also grants the CAO responsibility for emergency expenditures, taxation agreements, enforcement actions, and access to information compliance. The CAO can delegate powers to employees but remains accountable to Council, which appoints the CAO and approves employment terms. This bylaw also ensures that Council receives regular reports on key decisions and expenditures.

  • Council will also discuss the 2025 art acquisitions that have been recommended by Strathcona County’s Art Collection Advisory Committee. These include 13 new adult artworks selected from 71 submissions by 44 artists, and 14 youth artworks featured from a pool of 210 student submissions. The total budget for these acquisitions is $17,877. The County’s art collection totals 436 pieces, representing 274 artists, with 47 youth artworks and 63 major public art installations. New adult acquisitions will be displayed temporarily in the Community Centre’s Artrium before moving to other County facilities.

  • Strathcona County’s 2024 Public Satisfaction Survey showed continued high satisfaction among residents, with 91% rating the County as a good or very good place to live - though this is a slight decline from the previous year. Residents gave strong marks for safety (88%), raising children (92%), and community connections, but there were notable declines in satisfaction with public transit and certain rural services. A major gap persists between urban and rural residents, particularly in areas like snow clearing and road maintenance, where rural satisfaction remains much lower. County services overall received 79% satisfaction, with specific praise for recreation facilities, utilities, and emergency services. Only 3% of respondents were dissatisfied with County services overall. Conducted through telephone interviews with over 1,300 people, the data will help to inform the 2026 budget process.

  • Strathcona County firefighters undertook a five-year restoration project to save and refurbish the historic 1955 Pumper 2 fire truck, originally built for the Town of Beverly. The truck was nearly scrapped in 2020 but was purchased by local firefighters who restored it with help from Fleet Services and external specialists. Over the years, the truck served multiple roles, including a public education vehicle, and its restoration involved extensive mechanical, electrical, and bodywork repairs. Pumper 2 debuted publicly at the 2025 Ardrossan Parade and will be used for community events, educational purposes, and firefighter ceremonies. It will be permanently displayed at the new Cambrian Crossing Fire Hall once completed.
