The Alberta Government’s Alberta Next Panel begins this week, with a sold-out event for Sherwood Park residents on July 16th. The meeting will take place at the Edmonton Hotel and Convention Centre (4520 76 Avenue Northwest Edmonton, AB, T6B 0A5) from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with doors opening at 5:00 pm. Although tickets are sold out, overflow seating will be available, and attendees without tickets may still get into the main room on a first-come-first-served basis if space allows. Premier Danielle Smith says the initiative is aimed at addressing frustration with federal policies and exploring options like a provincial pension plan and police force.

On Tuesday, at 10:00 am, there will be a meeting of the Priorities Committee. The Committee will hear a 2026 budget update. Strathcona County is beginning its 2026 budget cycle under financial pressure, with a projected 6.63% municipal tax revenue increase needed to maintain services, fund capital and operational priorities, and resume a paused reserve replenishment strategy. Much of this increase is tied to decisions such as debt servicing for major infrastructure projects like the Indoor Fieldhouse and The Pointe Agricultural Event Centre, as well as increased staffing. Rising inflation, construction costs, foreign tariffs, and currency fluctuations are adding additional economic strain. The County is also experiencing strong population growth, with significant increases in mobility services, building permits, and new infrastructure since 2019. Although the County remains within debt limits, a projected $17 million reserve funding shortfall is being temporarily covered by one-time funds. The 2026 budget will require some careful decision-making to keep it under control!

Speaking of the budget, the Committee will hear some results from the 2025 Strathcona County Budget Survey. The survey gathered input from 739 respondents to guide the 2026 - 2029 budget. Fiscal sustainability emerged as a priority, with 33% ranking long-term fiscal sustainability as the top budgeting priority, followed by 24% who prioritized minimizing property taxes. When asked about tax strategies, 26% supported increasing taxes to enhance services - a view especially common among younger respondents under 35 and urban residents. 58% of participants felt they received good value for their taxes, with that number rising to 66% among urban residents but dropping to 40% in rural areas. The most requested service increases were for ambulance (43%) and fire services (38%), while 19% wanted to reduce bylaw enforcement funding. User fees were a less controversial topic, with 39% preferring a slight increase and 42% wanting fees to remain the same.
-
Also on the agenda is the Strathcona County Community Halls Strategy. The Committee will learn more about the Strategy, which aims to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the County's 18 community halls and seniors’ centres. The Strategy outlines shared outcomes focused on connected communities, collaboration, wellbeing, and financial sustainability. It acknowledges challenges such as aging infrastructure, changing community needs, volunteer dependence, and governance complexities. Next steps include creating an implementation plan, evaluation methods, and an investment framework.
- Strathcona County has launched a new pilot project aimed at tackling food insecurity and supporting community well-being. Food Finder Strathcona, an interactive tool, is designed to help residents easily locate local food resources, from food banks and community gardens to markets, grocery stores, cooking classes and cost-saving tips. Developed by the Food Security Action Table, a partnership that includes the Strathcona Food Bank, Alberta Health Services, local churches, and community organizations, the map is part of the County’s broader Community Safety and Well-Being Strategy. The pilot project will run until spring 2026, when the Food Security Action Table will review its impact and decide on its next steps.
