Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • Strathcona County’s Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility, built in 1988, needs a $45-million upgrade and expansion due to aging infrastructure and capacity limits. Currently, 20% of the bus fleet is stored outdoors, causing extra idling and inefficiencies. Construction is planned for 2029, with more detailed studies and designs starting in 2027. Council members have toured the facility and recognize the urgent need for expansion to keep up with population growth and increased transit use. The County is actively pursuing available federal and provincial grants to support the project.

  • A new footbridge over the North Saskatchewan River has opened, connecting Edmonton’s 167th Avenue to Sherwood Park’s Township Road 540. The bridge has been warmly received by cyclists and walkers. While the bridge is now open, some closures will continue over the summer to complete canopy installations. The River Valley Alliance highlights that a 25-kilometre gap between Devon and southwest Edmonton still remains to complete the entire river valley trail. Local leaders and community members are hopeful that government funding will prioritize finishing what they see as a world-class trail. An official grand opening and the bridge’s name reveal are planned for mid-September.

  • Council has approved the addition of 27 new works to its public art collection. Twelve pieces by adult artists will be permanently purchased, while 15 works by youth artists will join on a one-year loan. The acquisitions, costing nearly $18,000, are funded mainly through the 2025 operating budget with some support from public art reserves. Established in 1987, the County’s collection now includes 436 works by 274 artists, including 47 by youth. The youth works were selected from the Art Society of Strathcona County’s student competition and are displayed at Emerald Hills Leisure Centre. Adult pieces will be showcased in the Community Centre Atrium for one year before being placed in County facilities.

  • Strathcona County is working to upgrade Oak Street between Beauvista Drive and Sherwood Drive as part of its Residential Road Rehabilitation program. Work will take place in two phases: first, targeted concrete replacement of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, and then asphalt milling and resurfacing. Access to homes and facilities will be maintained, though temporary detours and parking restrictions will occur. A mini-roundabout and curb extensions will be built at the Beauvista Drive/Brentwood Boulevard North intersection to improve safety and reduce traffic speeds, alongside relocated crosswalks to shorten pedestrian crossings. These upgrades build on earlier traffic calming measures like raised crosswalks and a speed hump installed in 2023. Residents will receive advance notice with start dates and specific access details

  • Strathcona County has released its 2025 fall recreation and culture program guide, with registration opening at 7:00 am on August 19th for swimming and August 21st for all other programs. The offerings include activities for all ages and abilities, covering swimming, adult and youth wellness, visual and performing arts, outdoor pursuits, seasonal camps, and more. Registration can be completed through the Recreation Online portal or by submitting a physical form, though paper submissions do not guarantee placement. Participants are encouraged to set up or update their online accounts in advance to ensure a smooth process.
