Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • There are no Council or Committee meetings this week. Committees will convene again in September, with the Priorities Committee meeting on September 9th. The next Council meeting will take place on September 16th.

  • Strathcona County has officially opened The Pointe Agricultural Event Centre, marking the completion of a long-anticipated project first proposed in 2021. The $67-million facility spans nearly 100,000 square feet - about the size of three hockey rinks - and will host agricultural events, educational programs, and community gatherings. It features a large main arena with spectator seating, a barn with an animal wash bay, outdoor warm-up areas, meeting spaces, and accessibility features, along with free wi-fi. Ward 5 Councillor Aaron Nelson said the centre will support local farmers, create jobs, attract investment, and provide opportunities for youth interested in agriculture. The site also showcases new public art installations by Canadian artists, celebrating both agriculture and community life.

  • Sherwood Park will soon welcome Peak Athletic Centre, a 10,000-square-foot indoor facility dedicated to volleyball and pickleball. The space, set for a soft opening today and a grand opening on September 6th, includes three volleyball or four pickleball courts, along with advanced training tools like video delay technology, radar speed guns, and a serving machine. Owner Chris Dafoe, inspired by his own background in volleyball and coaching his children, emphasized affordability and accessibility as key goals, with plans to sponsor families who might not otherwise afford participation. The facility also aims to provide year-round opportunities for pickleball, a sport that currently thrives only in summer months.

  • Three families have moved into new Habitat for Humanity homes in Sherwood Park’s Summerwood neighbourhood, including a family from Cameroon who called the experience a dream come true. The new triplex units each feature three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and a rear detached garage. The new homeowner shared her family’s journey from Cameroon to Canada, explaining the challenges of saving for a down payment and the hope these homes bring for building a better life. Habitat for Humanity is expanding its efforts through similar projects in St. Albert and Leduc.

  • The Alberta Forever Canada petition has arrived in Sherwood Park as part of a province-wide push to gather 300,000 signatures by October 28th, aiming to secure a referendum on whether Alberta should remain in Canada. Launched on July 30th by former Progressive Conservative Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk, volunteers are setting up signing stations at farmers markets, community events, and public spaces. In Sherwood Park, signing opportunities are scheduled at the Deermound Dog Off-Leash Park and Festival Place in late August. Eligible voters must provide their name, address, and physical signature to participate. Another petition, currently tied up in court, asks whether or not Alberta should become a sovereign country. Which petition are you supporting?
