Sherwood Park Minute: Issue 75

Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • This is our 75th edition of Sherwood Park Minute, marking 75 weeks of tracking Council meetings and summarizing key details for residents! This newsletter was created to make local politics accessible, cutting through lengthy reports, jargon, and marathon meetings so more residents can stay informed and hold leaders accountable. We have covered debates on spending, taxes, and County priorities, highlighted good and bad decisions, exposed waste, and shown when core services are neglected. Funded entirely by readers, Common Sense Sherwood Park relies on donations to continue its work, so if you appreciate our work to improve Council accountability and ensure citizens stay informed, please consider making a donation to keep this newsletter and our other important municipal work going!

  • First responders in Strathcona County and across Alberta can now access critical patient information through Connect Care, the province’s electronic health record system. While paramedics will not have full platform access, they can view allergies, medications, past medical histories, and chronic health information, enabling them to provide more informed care. The initiative aims to improve continuity of care and enhance patient safety during emergencies. Eric Lowe, President of the Strathcona Professional Firefighters Association, said real-time access allows paramedics to make timely medical decisions that can improve outcomes. The project began in 2020 after MLA Nate Glubish joined a local ambulance crew on shift and advocated for expanded access. Glubish worked with stakeholders over five years to implement the change, emphasizing the time-saving benefits and improved care for patients. First responders’ persistent advocacy played a key role in bringing the initiative to fruition.

  • Strathcona County is exploring a new partnership with Just Serve, an international volunteer foundation that connects residents with service opportunities through an app and online platform. The platform, which operates in 17 countries and 6 languages, allows local groups and businesses to post volunteer needs that residents can fill directly. Canadian volunteer work is valued at roughly $55 billion annually and municipalities are increasingly embracing organized volunteerism. Already adopted in Spruce Grove, Just Serve is open to any non-profit initiative and hopes to link with Volunteer Strathcona and Family and Community Services.

  • After nearly a decade of planning and years of anticipation, Strathcona County has officially opened The Pointe Agricultural Event Centre at Pointe-Aux-Pins Acres. The 100,000-square-foot facility, celebrated on August 23rd with a ribbon-cutting by Mayor Rod Frank, is designed to be a hub for agricultural events while also serving broader community needs. With features like a spacious arena, barns, animal wash stations, and meeting rooms, the Centre offers opportunities for livestock shows, rodeo events, and local 4-H programs, while also hosting non-agricultural events. Fort Saskatchewan’s 4-H Beef Club was among the groups eager to use the new venue, praising its tailored design. Councillor Glen Lawrence noted the facility helps restore regional capacity for agricultural gatherings after the closure of Edmonton’s Northlands.

  • As students return to school in Strathcona County, local enforcement is reminding drivers to follow school zone rules to ensure safety. School zones are active from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on school days, with a 30 km/h speed limit. Drivers are urged to slow down near crosswalks, drop-off areas, and parked vehicles, especially during the first weeks of school when activity is unpredictable. In rural areas, motorists must stop for school buses displaying red lights and extended stop arms, with fines of $567 and six demerit points for violations. Urban buses rely on traffic controls to manage student drop-off, and drivers are encouraged to respect these measures. Additional back-to-school safety information is available on the County’s website.
