Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • At the Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce’s Mayor and All Ward Candidates Forum on October 6th, incumbent Mayor Rod Frank and challenger Benjamin Biel faced off on key issues for Strathcona County. Frank highlighted his experience and fiscal responsibility, noting lower cumulative taxes than inflation and a debt service ratio under 5%, while pledging to maintain high-quality municipal services. Biel, a political newcomer, emphasized improving Council communication and engagement, bridging urban and rural concerns, and being a relatable voice for residents, drawing on his personal and professional experiences. Candidates addressed questions on hospital expansion, agriculture, urban-rural representation, and community safety, with Frank stressing proven leadership and Biel focusing on openness, accountability, and modern communication.

  • At the same forum, Council candidates presented their priorities to voters. Key topics included affordability, traffic, public safety, and managing growth across the county. Candidates highlighted plans for fiscal responsibility, improved services, infrastructure renewal, community engagement, and support for both urban and rural residents. Incumbents emphasized experience and past accomplishments, while challengers focused on fresh perspectives, transparency, and enhanced communication with constituents. Each ward featured discussions tailored to local concerns, from water access in rural areas to snow clearing, traffic calming, and long-term planning. You can watch the forum on YouTube here.

  • Strathcona County Transit (SCT) workers and supporters gathered at County Hall to demand a fair contract, two years after unionizing under ATU Local 569. About 150 participants, including union leaders and allies from across Canada, called on municipal election candidates to back SCT workers in negotiations, highlighting issues such as supervisor discretion over wage increases, workplace favouritism, and lack of respect. Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan and ATU Canada president John Di Nino emphasized solidarity and accountability, urging voters to hold candidates responsible. While the union hopes to avoid a strike, ATU affirmed readiness to take action if negotiations fail, stressing that their goal is a fair collective agreement rather than conflict with County administration.

  • The Strathcona Food Bank (SFB) officially broke ground on its new 18,000-square-foot Nourish Centre in Sherwood Park, with construction expected to take 13-14 months. The facility, located near Broadway Boulevard and Broadview Drive, will feature a modern grocery-style pantry, walk-in freezers and coolers, a community kitchen, enlarged warehouse space, and areas for community programs. Funded through a combination of corporate sponsors, a $103,829 Strathcona County grant, provincial matching funds, reserve funding, and a $4.5-million capital campaign, the Nourish Centre is designed to replace the current Kaska Road location and serve as a hub for food security and community support for decades to come.

  • In response to questions posed by the Sherwood Park News, Councillor candidates shared their thoughts on budgeting and fiscal responsibility. Some candidates highlighted approaches such as priority-based budgeting, zero-based budgeting, multi-year financial planning, and line-by-line expenditure reviews to ensure tax dollars fund essential services like roads, public safety, infrastructure, and community programs. Many stressed transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability, with several pledging to minimize tax increases, avoid unnecessary debt, and involve residents in the budgeting process. Some candidates also noted the importance of balancing core service delivery with investments in growth and community amenities. You can read individual candidate responses here.
