Former Mayor Vern Hartwell, the first Mayor of Strathcona County, passed away on October 31st, 2025. Known as a visionary leader, Hartwell was instrumental in regional development, including his roles with the Alberta Capital Regional Alliance, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association, and the creation of the greater Edmonton Regional Chambers of Commerce. He championed community-building initiatives, such as the launch of Strathcona in Bloom and the creation of Millennium Place. Hartwell was recognized for his contributions with the King Charles III Coronation Medal earlier this year. In his honour, Strathcona County Council approved the ceremonial naming of “Vern Hartwell Way” along Premier Way. Colleagues and community members remembered him as a builder of community, a friend, and a leader whose impact will be felt for generations. County flags were lowered to half-mast ahead of his funeral as the community mourned his passing.

Strathcona County’s 2025-2029 Council was officially sworn in, with Mayor Rod Frank beginning his third term. Frank emphasized continuing high-quality municipal services, maintaining citizen satisfaction above 90%, and balancing fiscal responsibility with community investment. Frank called on Council members to commit to evidence-based decision-making, respectful collaboration, and a shared vision to make Strathcona County a leading community in Canada. The ceremony featured a procession by the County’s firefighters’ band and honour guard.

Strathcona County firefighter Brad Dicks won the Firefighter Challenge World Championship in Texas in late October, setting a world record in the men’s over-30 category with a time of 1:16.44. Competing against elite international athletes, Dicks overcame a challenging course that included taller towers, extra pylons, and longer dummy rescues compared to the Canadian FireFit Challenge. Dicks, who previously set a FireFit world record in Calgary in June, credits his success to support from his department, union, and family. The championship tested participants in five demanding areas, including high-rise pack carry, hose advance, and victim rescue. Dicks views this latest victory as another milestone in his ongoing firefighting athletic career and looks forward to the next World Championship in Las Vegas.

Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank recently wrote an op-ed reflecting on the importance of honouring veterans, coinciding with a recent ceremony that unveiled the new “Poppy” sculpture by artist Kyle Thornley. The steel installation, placed at the entrance to the County’s Cenotaph, symbolizes remembrance, resilience, and peace, inspired in part by Thornley’s grandfather, a World War II veteran. Standing seven feet tall, the metal sculpture took over 400 hours to complete and features lifelike details achieved through meticulous forging, plasma cutting, hand torching, and finishing techniques. The artist carefully studied real poppies to balance delicacy with durability, ensuring the piece could withstand public display while maintaining intricate realism. Throughout the creative process, Thornley reflected on the sacrifices made by military personnel and the importance of remembrance, describing the experience as emotional and meaningful.
- Strathcona County is seeking mural artists to create medium-scale murals along the indoor running track at Millennium Place for the 2026 Alberta Summer Games. Applications are due by December 8th. Artists or artist groups should submit a single PDF portfolio, which will be reviewed by an internal committee based on artistic quality, context, capacity, and professionalism. At this stage, mural concepts are not required. The games will take place across Strathcona County and nearby municipalities from July 16th to 19th, 2026.
