Sherwood Park Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Sherwood Park politics

📅 This Week In Sherwood Park: 📅

  • There will be a Council meeting on Tuesday at 9:00 am. Council will review a policy on the disposal of surplus municipal land. The policy aims to ensure that surplus land is sold through a consistent, transparent, and equitable process that seeks fair market value while prioritizing municipal uses and services benefiting the entire community. The policy follows several prior Council discussions and closed sessions dating back to 2024.

  • Also on the agenda is the 2026 mandate letter to the Economic Development Advisory Committee, thanking members for their work and outlining key priorities for the year. The Committee is being asked to focus on youth employment, incubators and scaling, the future of the Committee, and supply chain opportunities for local businesses, with progress reported to the Priorities Committee by the fourth quarter. Committees are expected to develop an annual work plan, hold up to six meetings, and use County resources efficiently, with Administrative support limited to about eight hours per meeting.

  • Administration will present updates and rescissions to governance policies for Council approval. The Accountability and Transparency Policy is recommended for rescission due to outdated content and duplication across existing legislation and policies. Updates to the Mandatory Review of Bylaws and Policies Policy include extending the review period from three to four years, removing bylaws from its scope, adding updated policy principles, and clarifying roles and responsibilities for Council and Administration. Once approved, the rescinded and updated policies will be reflected on the County’s website.

  • Also on the agenda is a motion to allow the County’s coat of arms to be used on one side of a proposed Strathcona County Citizen’s on Patrol challenge coin. The motion was brought forward by Councillor Nelson at the January 27th, 2026 Council meeting, and will be presented for debate and vote at this meeting.

  • Strathcona County Ward 2 Councillor Mike Derbyshire highlighted the scale and dedication involved in residential snow clearing during a ride along with County crews. December brought over 60 cm of snow, along with freezing rain and fluctuating temperatures, stretching equipment and staff. Four crews work 12-hour shifts with graders, blowers, trucks, and lead operators, supported by planners, dispatchers, and communications staff, to maintain more than 1,700 km of roads, trails, bus stops, and parking areas. Enforcement Services helps by moving vehicles to allow access for heavy equipment. Crews follow a priority system, clearing high-traffic roads first before residential streets. Derbyshire thanked residents for their patience and cooperation, emphasizing safety and adherence to parking bans, and encouraged continued community support as crews work through the rest of winter.
